It also remains a cultural tradition in ceremonial settings and is used in religious rites such as prayers. The paper's front and back surfaces are distinguished by texture: the smooth, glossy side is the front, and the rougher side is the back. Typically, printing is done on the smooth, glossy surface, but for a more textured feel, printing on the rougher back side is also acceptable.
