Born in 1944, German fashion designer Wolfgang Joop became synonymous with the founding of the JOOP! company (fashion and cosmetics). After completing his studies at Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Braunschweig, at his father's insistence, Joop began college studies in advertising psychology. However, uninterested in this career, he dropped out and started working as a restorer, becoming involved in the art world. In 1968, he began studying art, studies which he also did not complete. He married in 1970 (and later divorced—he has two daughters: fashion and jewelry designer Jette Joop and Florentine Joop), and his career as a designer began when he participated in a fashion competition sponsored by the German magazine Constance, winning in all categories. He went on to become fashion editor at the women's magazine Neue Mode, and in 1971 resigned to work independently as a journalist and designer. He achieved international success in fashion in 1978 by presenting his first fur collection. In the early 1980s, he debuted his first prêt-à-porter collection for women, followed by his first men's collection. With the worldwide launch of his collections of perfumes, clothing, shoes, jewelry, and eyewear under the name JOOP! (the capital letters and exclamation mark symbolize energy), Joop became recognized as a true fashion star. In 1998, Wolfgang sold a large part of his shares, and in 2001 sold the remainder. 1987 saw the launch of his first fragrance collection. The collection is also notable for its aftershave products. The men's fragrance line began with JOOP! Homme Eau de Toilette and aftershave, then expanded to include: JOOP! Jump For Him Eau de Toilette and aftershave, JOOP! Rococo for Men Eau de Toilette, JOOP! Go For Him aftershave, JOOP! Joop For Him Eau de Toilette, Joop! Nightflight Eau de Toilette, and JOOP! What About Adam For Him Eau de Toilette. The women's fragrance line includes: JOOP! Femme Eau de Toilette, JOOP! Rococo for Women Eau de Parfum, and JOOP! Jette For Her Eau de Toilette.
