Product Introduction
This ship had a strange fate, being built in Italy for the Argentine Navy and then transferred to the Imperial Japanese Navy just before the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War.
Its forward main guns differ from those of its sister ship, the Kasuga.
It formed the First Squadron with the Kasuga during the Battle of Tsushima, replacing two battleships that were sunk by mines off the coast of Port Arthur.
Because it was positioned at the rear of the First Squadron, it suffered damage second only to the Mikasa during a major turn in front of the enemy.
One of the crew members injured in this battle was Ensign Isoroku Takano, who would later become Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet.
When photographed on December 25, 1903, the ship's hull was painted white, but on January 9, it was repainted in naval colors and departed for Yokosuka just before the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War.
The voyage commander was Lieutenant Commander Kantaro Suzuki, Prime Minister at the time of the war's end.
