March 5, 1963. The Beatles began recording their third single, a new song called "From Me to You." The B-side features another new song, "Thank You Girl." Plus, "One After 909," said to have been written around the time John and Paul met. This CD contains the entire recording, recorded that day from 2:30 PM to 9 PM at Abbey Road Studios.
Highly anticipated as the follow-up to their hit single "Please Please Me," "From Me to You" had been written by John and Paul just five days prior, on a bus during their UK tour. Seven takes were recorded in the studio and then dubbed. Initially, the intro phrase was played using George's guitar phrase, but with George Martin's advice, the phrase was expanded with harmonica and chorus. They experimented with replacing the 'Dara-la-la-la, dundun-daa' with falsetto chorus and humming. This now-legendary recording, also documented in Mark Lewisohn's The Beatles: Complete Recording Sessions (Shinko Music), can be heard on this CD.
"Thank You Girl" was also recorded in six takes, with a seventh take added to correct the rhythmically off ending. You can hear Ringo's smashing drum fills. The cool, stylish rock 'n' roll track "One After 909" was recorded in five takes, but someone always made a chord mistake or the rhythm wasn't synchronized, resulting in the track being scrapped. When John yells at a band member who made a mistake, "What are you doing?" John then makes a mistake himself, prompting Paul to replies, "It's you, it's you." The conversations between songs and with the band members in the control room are also included, uncut. This undeniable Beatles documentary reaches your ears in front of your speakers. And what's more, it's the highest quality sound, delivered directly to stereo from the original two-channel master recording.
And as a bonus, the September 12th session is also included. This is the second day of the recording sessions for the second album, featuring nine takes of "Hold Me Tight" and four takes of George's original song, "Don't Bather Me." A voice from the control room exclaims, "Take 24!" The Japanese commentary, which explores the story behind why George's mysterious mumbling was recorded in the intro to "Don't Bather Me," which can still be heard on the official release, and the difficulties encountered during the recording of "Thank You Girl," is a must-read.
This incredible recording captures The Beatles in the studio in 1963, concentrating on recording the follow-up singles to "Love Me Do" and "Please Please Me."
