A new anti-fall canopy is fitted to the driver's cab side of the lead car. Connecting parts allow the train to pass through the curved rail C243 with a radius of 243 mm. The 223 series also features a function that allows the headlights to light up regardless of the direction of travel when the leading cars are coupled together, which was adopted on the 281 series Haruka.
