The reverse pilgrimage refers to visiting the 88 Shikoku Pilgrimage Sites in reverse order, starting from temple number 88. However, because the signposts installed for the pilgrimage are reversed, it is difficult to do so. It is said that doing it in reverse grants double the merit.
Furthermore, legend has it that Emon Saburo, the founder of pilgrimage, repented of his evil deeds and sought forgiveness from Kobo Daishi by going around the temples in the normal order 20 times, but was unable to find him. However, during a leap year, he went around the temples in reverse order, and finally found him. This is why it is said that doing it in reverse in a leap year grants triple the merit.
