Seated Statue of Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha), Wooden Carving
Yakushi Nyorai is a Buddha who bestows merits related to illness, which afflicts many people. The merits of Yakushi Nyorai include "healing from illness and longevity," as he removes disease. The right hand forms the Abhaya Mudra (fearlessness gesture), the left hand the Varada Mudra (wish-granting gesture), and a medicine jar (yakko) is held in the left palm. The halo is adorned with flying celestial beings.
△ Also known as Yakushi Rurikō Nyorai, he is the principal teacher of the Eastern Pure Land of Lapis Lazuli. The Yakushi Hongan Kudoku Sutra states that in the Eastern world, he practiced the Bodhisattva path, made twelve great vows, and achieved them. He has been worshipped since ancient times for saving all sentient beings from the illness of ignorance, bringing them happiness, fulfilling their faculties, and guiding them to liberation.
