●In the late Edo period, among the imported glassworks brought to Japan as art pieces, there was a particularly eye-catching glass vessel with an "arare" (hailstone) pattern. ●"Arare-mon" (hailstone pattern) refers to a beautiful design in which large and small dots (spheres) are arranged in an orderly fashion. ●This is an ancient Japanese pattern that can be seen in many traditional crafts other than glass, such as textiles and iron kettles. As glass technology advanced in Japan during the Meiji and Taisho periods, the "arare" pattern also began to be adapted.
