The delicate design, adorned with gold and silver, expresses nobility and elegance. Originally, it was made by Queen's Binder "A," one of the most prolific bookbinders in Restoration England. The balance of the intricate patterns applied to the entire cover is superb, and it would not be an exaggeration to call it a shining jewel born of its time. Queen's Binder refers to a small group of craftsmen who were active during the "golden age of bookbinding in England," and were widely known for their unique pointier technique. This design reproduces the binding of Richard Arestry's "The Government of the Tongue." Arestry, who served as the headmaster of Eton College, was a respected clergyman and monarchist, so it is not surprising that he commissioned Queen's Binder to bind his works. Recent research suggests that Queen's Binder refers to four separate shops, and even individual bookbinders like "A" may have been composed of multiple craftsmen. The name of this vendor, referred to as "A," is unknown, but there is no doubt about the high regard for their gold leaf binding of gift books, which is now included in the Henry Davies Gifts collection at the British Library.
